Fantasy Sci-Fi Network: Wow! You must be so excited to have just released your first book. Congratulations.
When did you start writing and why?
Katie: I started writing in when I was thirteen because I wanted to write something like Patricia C. Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles.
Fantasy Sci-Fi Network: What made you choose fantasy? (great choice by the way)
Katie: Fantasy has been my favourite since I was young. I grew up on a farm so I used my imagination a lot. My sister's and I used to pretend that the hay wagon was a pirate ship, or the neighbours bush was a magical forest.
Fantasy Sci-fi Network: A good imagination is a great place to start.
What’s the story behind your book title?
Katie: 'Bloodline' has to do with the descendants of a god. You know how in Greek legends the children of gods became heroes? A lot of the descendant's of the one god in the book become heroes for their world when it is needed most.
Fantasy Sci-Fi Network: I love it - reminds me of Thor or Percy Jackson.
What’s the basic plot of your book?
Katie: The world is dying and the great gods of Ayrenia need a hero to save it. They choose Braelyn, a young girl, who must be forged into the hero they need. In the midst of civil war, her father takes his family to a safe haven on the coast while he is off fighting. Braelyn’s life is cast asunder when pirates kidnap her and sell her into slavery. Using what her father taught her about fighting, she rises in the ranks of the arena, hoping to earn her freedom. If she survives, the gods have great plans for her.
Fantasy Sci-Fi Network: I like that you have a female hero.
I'm betting I know the answer to this one - which is your favourite character and why?
Katie: Braelyn, because she is what I wish I could be. Strong, courageous, and she stands up for her friends and loves her family. She is also very talented with a sword.
Fantasy Sci-Fi Network: Have you used any real people in your characters?
Katie: I basically modelled the character Gabrial after my friend Steve, though when I told him what happened at the end he wasn't too happy *laughs*
Fantasy Sci-Fi Network: oops! Spoiler alert! I hope you guys are still friends.
Have you used any real events or places as inspiration for your writing?
Katie: I took Classical and Medieval Studies in University, so the world of Ayrenia is modelled after both the Medieval world and the Greek/Roman world. Gladiators! Crazy Emperor's!
Fantasy Sci-Fi Network: Wow, that must have been fun. I'm a medieval nut myself and would have loved to study that. Do you have another job outside of writing?
Katie: I am a stay-at-home-mom with a beautiful son
