The plot consists of Matt Damon's character Max who lives in an overpopulated future Earth with no hope of a better life. Since childhood, he and his friend Frey (played by Alice Braga) have dreamed of escaping Earth and living in the amazing spaceworld of Elysium, where hunger and illness have been eliminated.
Of course everyone on Earth wants to escape their crowded planet, so the billionaires on Elysium have appointed a Secretary of Defense (played by the ever-capable Jodie Foster) to destroy or turn back any refugees from Earth. It struck me as being like pushing back the asylum seeker boats.
While the plot is fairly simplistic, there are interesting elements of technology which I enjoyed, such as the personal force field, exo-skeletons and USBs plugging into the brain. The action is fast paced and too violent for younger viewers, but older teens will love the fighting and special effect with cool flying cars thrown in. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!
Elysium is out now in cinemas. Kasper rating 4 stars * * * *
