Technology student Kaley Blackburn is granted the honour of being sent to the futuristic world of Femme to enhance her studies with a group of female Earth students. Femme world outwardly appears very advanced in technology, but socially is emotionally cold and backward, due to the oppression of the entire male population into slavery. There is a lack of familial recognition among the inhabitants.

Kaley is assigned a slave to facilitate her integration into this strange but beautiful world.  Mecca’s only job is to cater to the every whim of his mistress.

He appears a dutiful and obedient slave, but is he content to remain in servitude forever?   Despite her wishes to the contrary, Kaley develops feelings for her slave and this leads them to a difficult decision.  In a surprise twist, her friend Ronika has a part to play in their plans.

The book cover is absolutely stunning and captured my attention immediately.  Unfortunately I wasn’t immediately drawn to the beginning of the book, where Kaley is waiting in a transport station for her portal to the planet.  I think the lack of emotional connection with the Femme characters is intentional, but makes for a bland read.  The story improves markedly as soon as Kaley is assigned a handsome slave who is selected to cater to her every whim and guide her during her 6 week stay.

It develops into a smashing read and I definitely encourage you to give this series a try.  I can't divulge the best twist in the book, but trust me, it's a good one.  Great book from a new sci-fi writer.

Recommended for fans of sci-fi romance novels from young adult upwards.  I was given an ebook in exchange for an honest opinion and I enjoyed it so much, I bought an autographed paperback.

New book review: African Hearts by Laura O'Connell

An inspiring story of courage and romance in Africa.

I really enjoyed African Hearts and read it within 24 hours.

It's a touching story of Gina, a nurse from Australia's Gold Coast who is called urgently to Africa to see her deathly ill brother.  Unfortunately arriving a little too late, she becomes immersed in the life of his small African town as she struggles to come to terms with her newly met nephew, Justin and also the  handsome but emotionally wounded doctor, Kamukama.

The mostly peaceful, but occasionally violent life of Uganda is the perfect backdrop for this gently-told tale of overcoming obstacles and making the most of an economically poor, but emotionally rich lifestyle.  The characters are well-written and have their flaws, but become stronger as they use each other and their faith to realise their true potentials.

The young boy Justin is a delightful character, full of childhood innocence and positivity, but also morally wise beyond his tender years.  I love his bond with the lion cub, Maucho, as they play together in the grasslands.

My favourite line from the story is, 'Kam's smile kissed her heart."

It is not the type of book I would normally read, so I thank Writers' Web for sending me a copy to review.  It was time well spent.  I did think it somewhat reliant on dialogue and sparse with the plot, but sometimes it's nice to read a gentle and inspirational story that makes you slow down and really think about our world.  I enjoyed the writing style and thought it well edited.

On a romance scale, I'd rate it as 'Pride & Prejudice' (a very high) for it's lingering touches with heat and anticipation.I seriously can't believe it's been a month since my last review, as I've been on holidays and busily writing Dragon's Revenge.  It's nice to enjoy someone else's writing for a change.  :-)

Book review: Only Twelve Days by Eileen Thornton

Only Twelve Days is a sweet and gentle romance story set in England in the 60s.
Workaholic Bill Roberts is a business man and a widower with an adorable 4-year-old son named Joey.  He lost his wife in a car accident 3 years ago and does little but work and care for his son.
Sally is a somewhat naive 21-year old childcare worker who is quite dependent on her controlling parents, which was probably more common in the 60s than today.  She is currently studying and working part-time in a nursery.  While a pleasant lady, her circle of friends and life experiences are very limited.
Bill's son, Joey, is a sweet little boy who asks Santa for a Mummy for Christmas. There are Twelve Days left until Christmas, can Joey's wish really come true?
If you are looking for a gentle and predictable romance, then Only Twelve Days is just the book for you.  Unlike one of Eileen Thornton's previous mystery novels I have read (The Trojan Project), this one is very straightforward and while the plot meanders gently, with the odd obstacle to the romance, the result is never in any doubt.
I found some of the supporting characters to be quite shallow and one-dimensional, such as Colin and Jo, who were both rather annoying.  I couldn't figure out why Bill and Sally would chose either of them as best friends.
Little Joey is a nice character and I wish that more of the story concentrated on him, rather than the office politics which I found rather boring.
Being a fantasy and action writer myself, I just found that Only Twelve Days did not have enough pace for me and I would recommend it to romance fans as a nice read before Christmas.  Three stars *  *  *I reviewed a gift copy of Only Twelve Days and all opinions are my own.  I have previously reviewed Trojan Project by Eileen Thornton and really enjoyed it.

    Applying for book reviews:
I don't do many reviews, but will do the odd one from time to time.  Usually it'll be something that piques my curiosity.   I like to do reviews for Writers' Web and support emerging writers.
I am not interested in trading reviews, but if we are both interested in each other's work, that is OK.
I will give an honest opinion and if I think the work is not ready, I will let you know.  I am happy to post the reviews online.
