#movie #review Big Hero 6 is a surprise fave for the holiday season.  5 stars

12/28/2014

Picture
Ah..kids movies on the school holidays are a lucky dip, aren't they?  Sometimes you can find an original gem like a Shrek or Toy Story movie, others can leave you struggling to keep your eyelids open, such as Rio or a bunch of other movies whose names escape me (that's probably a good thing too!).
OK, so Big Hero 6 was kind of an accidental choice for us when the queue was so long that we missed half of Paddington Bear and Big Hero 6 happened to be on at the right time.  We entered a large cinema and gave a sigh when there were only 20 people in there - usually a sign of a lemon.
Luckily for us, we were right on the money with this movie. It has something for all ages.  There is a big cuddly robot with plenty of sight gags for the littlies; a teenager doing robotics which appealed to my science buff; an unlikely group of heroes including a pink one for the middle school kiddies; and a fairly good plot for the big kids (me).
The story is set in a mashed up land called San Fransokyo (a blend of the best parts of the East and West), where a young boy named Hiro embarks on a career of robotic programming and illegal betting competitions.  Luckily he has a pretty good little robot because it's a cut-throat career choice.  Hiro's future is looking pretty bleak when he is extended a lifeline by the University with a robotics research position.  There he meets a varied bunch of scientists who study varied fields such as lasers, magnetic levitation. chemistry and physics.
The big balloon-looking robot is named Baymax and he is a paramedic robot designed and programmed by Hiro's brother, Tadashi.  Baymax is a fun character, providing laughs, warmth and an odd kind of robotic empathy.  We seriously came out of the cinema and hugged the blow up Baymax in the foyer.
I digress....OK back to the story......Unfortunately there is a huge explosion at the uni where Hiro's brother is killed and this group of friends band together to investigate.  I could go on, but don't want to spoil the surprises for you.  Just do yourself a favour and grab a small child and some popcorn and go see it.

What is your favourite movie these holidays?

Spreading festive cheer ... the dragon way.

Some people assume that fantasy writers do not follow mainstream religion and they are either wiccan, fae, atheist or agnostic.  I believe Christmas has something for everyone and it doesn't matter whether you are a Jedi, Rabbi, Whovian, Hindu or Monk that we can all the spirit of thankfulness and giving.
I thought I might share with you today, some of the festivities I share with my family and young halflings.

I think I am not unlike other mothers who juggle work and family life and find the end of the year rather busy.  In the past two weeks we have had many break-up parties from school and extracurricular activities.  I particularly enjoyed the year One  Christmas carols from my little princess's class and also the art display from my sons' art school.  Well done kiddies!
We have also been giving Christmas cards of us at the Supernova Convention to teachers, family and friends.
We have driven around to various Christmas lights displays, one night of which was with a 90-year old author whose eyes lit up like a small child when she said it was the most fun she's had in ages.  We have visited friends in the nursing home, giving out homemade treats.  We have popped into  the neighbours and delivered home-made rum balls and White Christmas slice.
Being Australian, we have also spent time in the beautiful sunny weather, at parks, pools and beaches.  No snow for us over here in the warm 30 degree Celsius heat.

Picture
Now the shopping is all done, we are wrapping gifts for others including a new baby niece having her very first Christmas.
Now there are only 2 more sleeps until family arrives from interstate and the big man in red sneaks in to fill up the kiddies' stockings.
Our Christmas Day will be spent with family and friends playing in the pool and sharing some yummy food and thoughtful gifts.

So cheers to peace on Earth and good will to all peoples.
Have a peaceful Christmas, cheers Kasper and the Beaumont clan xx

Book launch of 'Holidays' by the entertaining William McInnes

12/17/2014

Picture
For any Australian, William McInnes needs no introduction.  He has been in some of the longest-running and most popular TV shows, such as A Country Practice; Blue Heelers and Seachange, before turning his hand to a very successful career in writing.
McInnes hails from my own small town and writes much of local lore, which I find both familiar and entertaining from his humorous perspectives.  I had heard he was lots of fun in person and his book launch certainly cemented that fact for me.  After entering the library with a mad dash to the loo, McInnes launched into a series of gastro gags, likening the dash to a Tony Abbott power walk.  He really is hilarious and so lively and fun to meet in person.
His new novel, Holidays sounds like a riotous adventure.  You get such a great visual picture by listening to him speak, whether it is standing open-mouthed under the udder of the Big Cow, to expressing a desire to visit the much famed 'Gay Taree'  (a reference to fun times of the past, rather than of the sexual orientation).
I really enjoy the way McInnes makes the everyday cheapo holiday to a destination at a motel not far away, sound rather exciting and full of fun memories.
There was a touching moment when he mentioned a holiday where the whales off Stradbroke Island reminded him of a previous holiday there with his late wife.  The whales each turned 360 degrees as if in a silent tribute to his late partner.  His sharing of this very personal experience of his grief was very touching and I'm sure I wasn't the only one joining him in a tear.
Picture
A younger McInnes during his acting years
McInnes's writing include: A Man's Got to Have a Hobby 2005; Cricket Kings, 2006; That'd Be Right,  2008; The Making of Modern Australia; and Worse Things Happen at Sea, co-written by his wife Sarah Watt, in 2011.

I'm looking forward to reading 'Holidays' and hoping there is a seriously funny audio book to go along with it.
Bravo William McInnes.

What does a fantasy author do on her birthday? You may be surprised.

Supernova Convention (I would think resting a light sabre against your shoulder would be bad for your health)
You may be under the impression that fantasy authors lead totally wild and energetic lives.  Well, I’m here to confess that although some days we do like to dress up as elves or Jedi and hang out at comic book conventions, sometimes we just like a quiet day down the beach with the halflings (kiddies) or going for a walk in the woods.  Some of us are fairly quiet and introverted types, not unlike a skittish unicorn or rare water sprite.
Today my dream of becoming the owner of a baby dragon unfortunately was left unfulfilled, but I was delighted to receive a totally awesome exercise bike which I can ride whilst watching all my favourite fantasy movies and the Big Bang Theory (yep, I’m a nerd, through and through, and proud of it).  I also received a large box of colourful dragon eggs, otherwise known as marble truffles, which look totes amazing.  Yummo.

My children finish up school today for the year, so we dropped into school briefly to gift the wonderful teachers with home decorated pinecones and coloured-in Christmas cards done by my little cuties.  School teachers are such a big part of our lives and we have been blessed to have such a professional and dedicated bunch of them at our local school.

Now we’re off to make some rumballs (with the local favourite Bundy Rum) and White Christmas with cherries and smarties for Christmas gifts.  Christmas cooking is da bombe and it’s great to have a stash for all the neighbours and visitors likely to pop in over the next 2 weeks.

Then we will have a swim in the pool with maybe a spot of volleyball or water pistol wars.

Now that I have dispelled all your fantasies of me doing Cosplay or Avatar-like party games, I’ll just be heading off on my broomstick (AKA exercise bike) and zooming in for Harry Potter with the halflings.

Have a great day everyone, cheers, Kasper.

These truffles, otherwise known as Dragon's Eggs, explained the need for my new exercise bike :-)

'Cyclops' by Mike Fertig
Dragon's Revenge is the final in the trilogy The Hunters of Reloria. I received this copy in exchange for an honest review as part of the release tour for this book, having previously buying book 2 myself.

The weary band of heroes are valiant in their quest, despite their losses, they do as true heroes do, battle on despite Their pain and suffering knowing that the quest is more important than their individual pain.

The world building continues to grow, Kasper Beaumont leads us onto the twin planet in this book and we meet the foe on their home turf, The imagination is brought to life with both
the descriptive writing of the author and also the sketchings and paintings that have been included in this final edition.

One of my favourite places that we get to visit was the world of the wizards, talk about a crazy unpredictable place. This book is just full of places that will get any fantasy lovers imagination engaged.

I was happy with the outcome of this final book, but there is scope for more adventures I am sure, and if these characters start demanding for more I am sure that Kasper will let them out and once again let the creative juices run riot.

As I have said before this series is suitable for readers 12 and upwards, and probably younger if the reader has got a good vocabulary base. This series will engage young reader and let their imaginations run wild as all good book should.

Well done Kasper for creating a world that all ages can get lost in and find that child like adventure of old.

5 stars I love the mermaids, October 19, 2014

By Josie West (CA) -
I was given this book for an honest review by this talented author. After finishing the ELVEN JEWEL, I looked forward to once again be transported to another world. I found this book superb! It was intense! I love the mermaids, centaurs, and dragons… this has a fast-moving plot and action packed with new characters. Their continued journey is treacherous what with battles and magic.
I highly recommend this excellent read for middle school kids and the young at heart. It will not disappoint!

Hunters of Reloria fans are worth their weight in gold!  All are welcome in the Relorian Alliance #fantasy #fanclub

12/1/2014

Picture
Aged from 10 to 80-something, this excited group of Hunters of Reloria fans love telling people about the Hunters of Reloria series.  I have really appreciated the Relorian Alliance fans at my recent book launch and books signings.  It mean such a lot to me that my fans will approach total strangers and recommend my books to them, especially since I'm a bit shy with the publicity side of things.
I have had fans of all ages giving reviews at my book launches and also coming out to the shopping centre and local book café to help spread the good word about fairies bonded to halflings and massive dragon battles.

I really appreciate any endorsement you all give for the series and have been convinced by the Relorian Alliance to do a signing at Supernova pop culture festival next year.  Now, that would be totally amazeballs!  Hanging out with the likes of Robin Hobb; Star Wars actors; Harry Potter characters and Finn from Adventure Time (Yes, I got to meet him and got an autograph too!)  Yep, I'm a total fan nerd and proud of it - Bazinga!

I have made a Facebook page specifically for the fans and anyone who enjoys the series is welcome to join it and get my sneaks peaks and fan news.  I have given away about 30 drink holders with the Hunters of Reloria fan club written on them and now have t-shirts on sale if you're interested.  Come along and check out the Relorian Alliance on FB.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/1409049572709711
