This movie is worth a look: Gods of Egypt #GodsofEgypt #movie

After an enjoyable afternoon at the cinema, I was quite surprised to read that 'Gods of Egypt' is a lemon.  Well, let me contradict the trend by saying how much I enjoyed it.  There were several points working in its favour in my mind.  1. The mythology of the golden age of Egypt, when the Gods lived among mortals; 2. Some pretty cool special effects;  3. Darn good looking eye candy  and 4. Fond memories of the Stargate movie and TV series.
We go to the movies for entertainment and escapism and in my mind, Gods of Egypt met these criteria perfectly.

Have you ever read ancient Egyptian texts and wondered what their Gods would look like and how they would behave towards the commoners?  I have always had a fascination for this.  Whereas in Stargate, the powers that appeared magical were mostly due to technological superiority, here it is interpreted in a more traditional sense.
Picture
Gods of Egypt was directed by Alex Proyas and stars Gerard Butler as Set, Geoffrey Rush as Ra, Nickolaj Coster-Waldau (the ripped fighter from Game of Thrones) as Horus, Chadwick Boseman as Thoth, Brenton Thwaites as Bek, Elodie Yung as Hathor, Rufus Sewell as Urshu and Courtney Eaton as Zaya. - all in all a gorgeous cast with some pretty impressive CVs.
So, I recommend going in with an open mind and you might find that you really enjoy it like I did.

Hunter's favourite Nadja Losbohm stops by for an interview @nadlo82 #FSFNet

My guest this week for the Fantasy Sci-Fi Network blog is Nadja Losbohm.  Regular readers here will remember that Nadja is a German author and friend of mine who is a successful author of now six books in German and one called The Huntress which has been translated into English.
Genre: Young Adult Urban Fantasy Romance
Young Nadja came on my blog way back in 2014 when she was talking about the involved process of translating her novel into English.  You can read the previous blog here.

Here are the highlights from Nadja's interview:
  • She now has six books published - holy guacamole, that's awesome!

  • Plus there is a children's book and short stories.

  • Nadja reveals her chosen theme song for The Huntress

  • Her next venture is a bit of a change with historical fantasy

  • Her bucket list place to visit is one on my list as well.

  • We have a lot in common

You can read the entire interview on the FSFNet here.

The Huntress - the Beginnings synopsis:
Ada Pearce is an average young woman. She is 5’4” tall, overweight, and doesn’t play sports of any kind. Shortly after her 21st birthday a mysterious priest informs her of her destiny as a huntress. Ada doesn’t believe that story at first, but when she finds out that creatures of the night threaten the human population, she accepts her destiny, gives up her former life, and moves into the secret rooms of St. Mary’s Church, which had been built hundreds of years ago, and begins her training.

In flashbacks, the protagonist herself tells her story, beginning with her first meeting with the enigmatic and unapproachable priest, through her first year of training and her secret life, to the problems she encounters on her first hunt, and the issues which crop up when a priest and a woman live together…

Introducing children's sci-fi author: Kate Foster for the Fantasy Sci-Fi Network #FSFNet

What a scoop!  I'm excited to introduce a well-known editor and blossoming author to our Fantasy Sci-Fi Network.
Kate Foster is the editorial director of Australian publishing house: Lakewater Press and also does freelance work and judges writing competitions.
Her first novel is Winell Road: Beneath the Surface, which was published in 2015 by Jet Black Publishing.  There is a sequel due out in 2016.

Highlights of my interview with Kate:
  • Her reason for choosing a pen name
  • The fact that she wrote the ending of her story before the beginning (hmm ... that's tricky)
  • Kate and her cover designer think similarly
  • She admits to being a 'Twitterhead' which is a thing, apparently ;-)
  • She has the actors picked out already for her movie and audiobook, yes, this lovely lady has big plans for the Winell Road series
You can read the full interview here on the Fantasy Sci-Fi Network blog along with many other weird and wonderful authors.

Twelve-year old Jack Mills lives at 5 Winell Road and has probably the world's weirdest neighbours. Like freakishly weird. And to top it off, he lives with Mum: nosy, interfering, a hideous cook, and Dad: unsuccessful inventor of the Camera Belt and Self-Closing Window. All in all, it's a boring, embarrassing, dead-end place to live.
So when Jack arrives home from school one day, a close shave with a UFO is the last thing he expects. But the fact it doesn't abduct him, and that no one else, not even Mum, sees the gigantic flying saucer hovering over the street, adds a whole new layer of strange.
Picture
Soon after, an alien encounter threatens Jack’s life and he becomes embroiled in a galaxy-saving mission. With the assistance of his new neighbour, frighteningly tall Roxy Fox, he discovers Winell Road is hiding secrets—secrets Jack might wish he'd never uncovered.
You can check out Kate's work on Amazon.

Ye gads!  Ichabod Temperance time travels in for an interview @IckyTemperance #FSFNet

Here is our quirky leading man, the inimitable Ichabod Temperance ... hey, wait a minute.  This is the adorable Miss Persephone Plumtartt, Icky's muse and long-term travelling companion throughout his myriad of adventures.  I must admit that a little photo-switcheroo is not the least of the fun that happens when Ichabod drops by for an author interview.  I managed to scoop an interview with our Steampunk author,  which you can read on FSFNet.com.
Oh and by the way, here comes Icky, looking as original as ever with his cat, Kitka.

What can we look forward to in Ichabod's interview:
Firstly is his unique writing style with its  embellishments and tongue-in cheek humour.
He shares a little of his new 'Title of Temperance' novel with us, in which he is catapulted back in time King Arthur's court
There's a little teaser to the upcoming 'Journey to Temperance' as well
Icky answers my questions with panache and humour which leaves me with a stitch from laughing.  Just wait until you read what our Steampunk hero's dream job would be.
Here's the link for all that and more .. FSFNet interview

 Title of Temperance synopsis:
Ohhh, my noggin. What has happened? I took a whallop upside the head and woke up in a place far from my time and home. Instead of it being the modern era of 1877 like it ought to be, I am in the distant past of England's Dark Ages! There are mighty warriors in gleaming armour, and beautiful ladies wearing colourful gowns with taffeta secured dunce caps.
This is the castle Camelot! I am in the company of King Arthur and his majestic Knights!
Golly, can you imagine? Me, Ichabod Temperance, an Alabama tinker in King Arthur's Camelot!

Oh, Goodness, it ain't took too long before I already have trouble up to my hat's brim what with Mr. Merlin, Miss Morgana, and a big mean knight in black armour getting bristly with me. Gee whiz, if I ain't careful, I might end up wrecking there ever having been a Western Civilization!
