Chris Johnson is an Australian author who lives in Brisbane with his wife and daughter. His books blend the esoteric mysteries, science fiction, fantasy, with a dash of Twilight Zone, and a twist of dry humour. He has published numerous short stories and novels, and has many more to come.
Chris' story and book ideas come from a rich background as a stage magician, a mentalist, a psychic, and even a computer systems programmer!
He also blames growing up in the 1980s on a diet of Atari computer games and television shows. Onstage, he used to read people’s thoughts; bend spoons, keys and forks; and he predicted newspaper headlines up to a week before their publication (including the Los Angeles Riots of 1992).
Nowadays, he still performs, but he also entertains people through his stories, which always include an element of the weird and wonderful, the bizarre or the supernatural.

His first book, Twelve Strokes of Midnight, is a collection of short stories, steeped in twists and turns, containing threads he says may lead into his other works and even each other. Each short story in the Devil's dozen coincides with a clock strike, drawing you into the witching hour and the impending horrors watching you from the shadows.

Author Interview:
Kasper:  Readers, let me introoduce you to one of the funniest and most genuine authors I've met in the Readers Lounge.  Welcome Chris Johnson. Settle in mate while we launch our levitating interview lounge.
Chris:
Wow!  This is fun.

Kasper:
What was the defining event that made you start writing?
I always enjoyed writing and creating stories. My earliest recollection of thinking I’d like to write a book is in the Summer of 1982/1983 and I started a book called Journey To Ekka. I was eleven. A year later, I started another called Hunter; it was about a superhero. Readers of Dead Cell will catch wind of this same hero with a different name: Predator. I "completed" the novel in 1997. Maybe I will publish it one day.

What are you working on now?
I’ve just finished While He Was Sleeping, a supernatural thriller set in 1986/87, which is due for release on 15th March 2020. It’s in marketing and promotion right now while I rest.
But after that, a few projects stand out in mind for me including another anthology, a self-help book (related to my work as a mentalist), and a few other things. One of them may involve Craig Ramsey, my psychic detective character from Dead Cell and Demon Blade.

What are common traps for aspiring writers?
I think following every other writer’s rules and idiosyncrasies is a trap.
Picture
Show, don’t tell.
Kill all adverbs and adjectives.
Aspire to write xxxx words a day.
Adhere to this target.
Blah blah blah.

Don’t hang yourself on every bloody rule. Plenty of better writers, successful writers, too, break those same rules and more.

Yes. A writer must learn their craft, study each tool and how to use it, but then learn how to change things to match.

An analogy: A short guy’s kung fu is different to a lanky guy’s kung fu. Fight to your strengths.

Same for writing.

Have you ever had reader’s block?

Reader’s block? Never heard of it.

Neither have I had writer’s block, but there are times the “zone” locks me out like a prickly pub owner. But there’s always a reason called life.

Look after your body, your health, and keep your family in order first. Writing comes afterwards... or you may end up like Hemingway.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
I try a little of both.

Having been an entertainer for most of my life, I know it’s not just about what I like. It helps, but my readers matter too.

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

Most research happens before I start writing, as I did for While He Was Sleeping. It contains elements of Tibetan Buddhism and mysticism. I researched it thirty years ago when I wrote the first outline. Yet it still helped to check out certain groups online and check other pieces when the need arose.

My technique was similar for Dead Cell. I researched weapons, their drawbacks, and the CIA experiments on psychics. Being a psychic entertainer helped fill things more. And I even asked a doctor friend of mine about some medical instruments.

Research is important but don’t wow the audience with a documentary. The story is king.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

Getting inside their heads is the most difficult part. But research helps there too. Ask your significant other, a friend of the opposite sex, etc. Read other stories in that voice. It all helps.

Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?

I love this question. No matter what I say, no one will believe me.

No! I don’t.

A couple of people might read themselves (or others) in my stories. That says something, I guess, sort of like the song.

"You’re so vain. You probably think this book is about you..."

Do you believe in writer’s block?

I believe in crowded minds more than writer’s block. Like I said about reader’s block, it’s merely a sign of an overcrowded mind. Relax. Take a break. Rebalance you’re life.

Favourite food: Vegetarian. It goes well with steak.
Favourite drink: Milo
Silliest saying: He who lives by the sword gets shot.
Best holiday spot: Byron Bay
Favourite song at the moment: Do-Wah-Diddy-Diddy (ever since I wrote While He Was Sleeping, it’s stuck in my head)
With writing, are you a plotter or (seat-of-your) pantser? Mostly a plotter, but if I have a section that I haven't planned out, I pants it out when I get to it.
Star Wars or Lord of the Rings: Battlestar Galactica
Best superpower: Tying knots in cherry stems with my tongue
Number one thing to do on your bucket list: Live, not exist.

Thanks Chris.  It's so cool to learn about you and your works.

Review of the exciting 'Suffrage' scifi adventure by Julian Green @jsagreenauthor #scifi

My review of Suffrage: 5 stars. A brilliant debut novel
From the very first page, I was hooked in by the tale of young Jay with her superhuman powers being rescued from a laboratory-type prison.
The setting is modern-day Earth, but the characters come from an alternative reality, where the utopian lifestyle for some comes at a harsh price for others. Our group of alternative-reality heroes wake up with amnesia in a present day air-force base. They slowly come to realise that their mission is to find a hidden world key in our reality, which can grant the wielder great powers. Unfortunately for Jay and her friends, a huge spaceship full of angry pursuers is hot on their trail and eager to destroy them.
Suffrage is very well written and edited, with a perfect balance of action and character development. At the heart of the story is the core group of friends on their mission to find the key. Each character is unique and has a part to play in the team. There are dozens of other characters introduced and I did find it overwhelming at the start, but it all comes across well as the story progresses. On character named Stanford seemed important at first, but then disappears and left me wondering why.
The author uses tension and pace very well in this multi-focal story. There are a lot of characters with differing motives and agendas. I would have liked more defined chapters and less points of view, but overall it works pretty well.
For me the standout point of the story is the harmonic time-travelling device used by the character named Snake. It shows great originality and creativity from the author.
I'll definitely read this again and eagerly await the next instalment in the World Key Chronicles.
I purchased the paperback version and posted the review on Amazon.
Suffrage's Blurb:
There is something hidden on Earth. A secret so immense it's worth killing for. In a race against time, five travellers arrive, hunting a key that will change the balance of power in their world.

Jay's birth father is a monster. He destroyed half her world and established a twisted version of utopia from the ashes, ruled by the Five Monarchs. But his blood flows in her veins, giving her power beyond any human. She has to prove that she's not him; that she's better. With the help of her teammates, she has to stop him from destroying her adoptive family and her world by finding the one thing that can make her his equal. But will the world key make her a monster, too?
Dr Stanford Ellis, an American scientist, is tasked with understanding these travellers. What does their arrival mean, for his country and the world? He must unravel the mystery before it’s too late.

Little do the travellers know, they were followed to our Earth. The Walker King has come seeking the rebels, and will let nothing stand in the way of his revenge. Freedom comes at a price.

Author interview with fellow Aussie: Jeanette O'Hagan @JeanetteOHagan #FSFNet #fantasy #interview

I enjoyed reading Heart of the Mountain by Jeanette O'Hagan. Luckily for me, I had a chance to interview the author herself.
Book blurb:
Twins Delvina and Retza’s greatest desire is to be accepted as prentices by their parents’ old crew when they stumble across a stranger. Trapped under the mountain, young Zadeki’s only thought is to escape home to his kin. Peril awaits all three youngsters. Will they pull apart or work together to save the underground realm?

Jeanette is a fellow member of the Intricate Worlds writing group and I'm stoked she has followed me over to the FSFNet.
We did an interview for the Fantasy Sci-Fi Network, and you can read it all
here.

These are some of the highlights:
 * Jeanette began the world-building of Nardva when she was just 9 years old.
 * An interesting fact not in our interview is that she studied in script writing at university and helped me with my first script at a recent writers' critique meeting.
 * I like the fact that her story title has a double meaning
 * I'm getting the feeling that Jeanette may be a bit of a Whovian

Make sure you check out the full interview

Book review: Morphids by K. Alexander-Hall #FSFNet   A new fantasy classic

A new favourite fantasy story
I
s Morphids really the author's first novel? I was so impressed with the intricate plot weaving and world-building. This book has everything: action, adventures, surprises, twist and turns, multiple storylines and relatable characters. Hey, I can't reveal any of Morphids secrets here, but safe to say that I was laughing, crying and reading late into the night as I eagerly devoured this exciting tome. It's a sizable tale of George R.R. Martin proportions, which might explain why there's only one so far. I have contacted the author and am reassured there are more works in progress. Yay!
My favourite characters are Atesh the female warrior, and also Ciaran, the dragonelle who is her companion. I really enjoyed their relationship and can't wait to hear what will happen in the next instalment.
Well done to Kerry Alexander-Hall for this fantastic new addition to the fantasy genre.

Morphids was published in December, 2016
Book blurb:  The Prophet Lailoken sighed. This would be his last vision to share. The last words he would speak. The vice like grip tightened around his heart. Wait a little longer, they must know; remember and prepare. On the world of Cerahya, nature’s harmonious balances and checks have been disturbed; interfered with. She rails against such abhorrent intrusions and struggles to regain order. Unfortunately re-establishing control unleashes deadly, calamitous events on the island continent of Sofala, catching the inhabitants of the western kingdom unaware. The High King, Gareth Beaumont calls for assistance from the Ashmourne Academy of Magic. They respond by sending their infamous 'Pace Alastriona Knights', led by Commander Atesh and Captain Ballard. Their first battalion of magic-enhanced, ale-swilling, knuckle-busting, gag-pulling, sword-dancing, fierce warrior misfits join forces with the King's personal regiment. Together with mystical allies, they race to reduce the fallout to life, love and liberty upon their homeland. As they search for the source behind the malevolent machinations at work, they uncover truths so repugnant, it will send them reeling. Will interpreting the strange riddles and finding the ancient prophecy hold the key to the game of life; playing out before their eyes?

An interview with Chris Johnson: author and mentalist #FSFNet @aus_mentalist

Picture
Chris Johnson is an Australian author who was born and raised in Rockhampton, Queensland. He now lives with his wife in Brisbane, where he works as a stage mentalist when he is not writing. He also has a background in sales and marketing, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology.
Chis Johnson joined me for an intuitive author interview at the FSFNet.
Here are some of the highlights:
*   Chris is toying with writing a new genre under a pen name.
*   He has a series of 6 books yet to be published.
*   His laid-back style makes him stand out in the fantasy genre
*   I like his sassy ghost character
*   Chris has an exciting new surprise coming in the new year

For all these details and much more, click here for the full FSFNet interview.
Chris Johnson's new release is Dead Cell

Road fatalities in Statton have jumped in a week to nearly half of Queensland's annual figures, and the authorities are concerned. They believe them to be accidents caused by driver carelessness and bad luck, but when his adopted daughter is killed, psychic investigator Craig Ramsey believes the causes are supernatural. He and his spirit companion Emily Fraser join forces with skeptic Detective-sergeant Brianna Cogan to catch the killer – but how do you catch a killer who is already dead?

Book review: Heart of the Mountain by @JeanetteOHagan #fantasy

Jeanette O'Hagan creates a world rich in lore and mystery.  It kicks off with a good action hook and there is an undercurrent of dire consequences for failure.  There is plenty of action, well interspersed with snippets of background reveal and lovely imagery, eg: 'the melting snowflake in his calloused palm.'.
My favourite character was Zadeki: a mysterious stranger from the forbidden 'outside' who has somehow come into supposedly impenetrable mountain.  His secret was a well-written surprise which sets the tone for more enlightening.  He is brave and would risk his own life for what he believes in.
I would recommend this novella to those who enjoy a short and entertaining fantasy read.
Four and a half stars from me.
I received a free copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.

Author interview with my favourite halfling: Kerry Alexander-Hall #FSFNet

Picture
With a long history of writing academic papers and studying, you could be forgiven for thinking Kerry Alexander-Hall is only a serious scribe.  The truth is that you couldn't be more wrong.  Kerry has written a delightfully witty and massively exciting first novel, which you'll just have to read to appreciate.
Kerry took a place on the FSFNet interview throne to chat with me.  Here are some of the highlights:
*  She describes her protagonists as: 'magic-enhanced, ale-swilling, knuckle-busting, gag-pulling, sword-dancing, fierce warrior misfits.'
*  I learned that Kerry is a third-generation writer.  What a legacy.
*  She alludes to a history of magic in our own world
*  Kerry has detailed and useful advice for aspiring authors.  Gee, my advice would be just to make a friend like Kerry ;-)
*  There is a 'puss in boots' technique for developing cover artwork
*  Her stated hero has been unlucky in more than one role
....There are so many more great titbits, but I don't want to spoil it for you.  Check it out here.

Fun fantasy writing with the Intricate Worlds Group

9/17/2016

Picture
Writing groups come in all shapes and sizes from social get-togethers to full-on professional assistance sessions.  I'm looking for something in the middle of those two extremes and I think the group I attended today has the perfect balance.
Intricate Worlds writing group is for fantasy and science-fiction authors from around South East Queensland.
Today we had a critique session and a writing activity.  I was really excited to receive some constructive feedback on my Eventful First Kiss story.  The other short stories and excerpts read were very well written and I enjoyed hearing them.  There are very talented writers in the group.
The writing exercise was to write for 10 minutes about a randomly-drawn character, genre and setting.  My was a haughty middle-aged man with a murder in a Synagogue, written in a post-apocalyptic world.  Apart from me getting tongue-tied trying to pronounce 'post-apocalyptic,' it was loads of fun.
I look forward to our next catch up.
Write on.

I bet many of us have wanted to jump through a portal into the Minecraft world.  Well, Louise Guy has found a way to do it with her Crafters' Club book series.
After leaving home and taking a one year break with a drive around Australia, Louise has taken the time to follow her passion of writing.  After early writing as a contemporary women's writer, she has changed tack and penned a series based on the popular Minecraft computer game.
Louise enjoys reading, and hanging out at the pool or beach with her family.
Louise Guy joined me for an interview on the Fantasy Sci-Fi Network:
Here are a few highlights to whet your appetite:
*   Louise's son inspired her to write about Minecraft
*   She does a lot of research and consulting with gamers to get the best storylines for the Crafters' Club books
*   Some of her book characters bear a resemblance to her family
*   Writing at the crack of dawn is the best time for Louise
*   Her preferred super power is an interesting choice

H.M. Clarke has a resume which includes such diverse occupations as author, accountant, console operator, paper shuffler and ambitions to be a cheesecake taste tester (I'm all for that last one BTW).

I recently caught up with Australian H.M. Clarke for an interview exclusive for the Fantasy Sci-Fi Network.

Here are some of the highlights from our chat:
  • H.M. reveals the controversial political topic which was her inspiration for The Enclave.
  • Her favourite quote is a Chinese proverb
  • She was moved to tears by a certain line from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
  • The Hobbit actor H.M. would like to be stuck on a deserted planet with
  • It's always time for a road trip
  • and more ...
