Jeanette O'Hagan creates a world rich in lore and mystery. It kicks off with a good action hook and there is an undercurrent of dire consequences for failure. There is plenty of action, well interspersed with snippets of background reveal and lovely imagery, eg: 'the melting snowflake in his calloused palm.'.
My favourite character was Zadeki: a mysterious stranger from the forbidden 'outside' who has somehow come into supposedly impenetrable mountain. His secret was a well-written surprise which sets the tone for more enlightening. He is brave and would risk his own life for what he believes in. I would recommend this novella to those who enjoy a short and entertaining fantasy read. Four and a half stars from me. I received a free copy of this story in exchange for an honest review. |
