Guest post: How Writing My #1 Best Seller Saved My Business (and Sanity) by Charlene Brown @bkcustomdesigns

Hi folks: I'd like to introduce you to an exciting and dynamic author who has a great understanding of the challenges and opportunities in this brave new world of ebook self-publishing.
Here she is, the knowledgeable Charlene Brown.
cheers, Kasper.

When I made the decision to create a product for my brand to help cultivate my authoritative platform and generate buzz, I wondered what could I possibly do that would have a significant impact but not swallow my available time to be hands-on with my audience.
The solution that was a winner for me: write an e-book! I wrote two books and my latest, Keep It Super Simple: A Business Guide to Building a Personalized Branding Roadmap To Turn Clicks Into Profit. However, e-books are part of an industry that has exploded; witnessing a growth in entrepreneurial interests.

Most home business niches are overdone and filled with uncertainty or fraud. Most online business opportunities promoted in magazines and websites the options are all extremely similar; establish a daycare center, be a personal shopper, stuff envelopes or do medical coding and billing from home, etc. While money can be made from these niches, and loads of money depending on your hustle, the market has become oversaturated & quality job offers can be difficult to find. However, e-books are in an industry that has exploded; witness to a growth in entrepreneurial interest.

E-book authors are now known as “info entrepreneurs”. Most amass high quality information or write their own fiction e-books to sell online through venues including Amazon, Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo. Some people are able to secure very comfortable full time careers from this, and yes, they do it 100% from their own home or anywhere they care to be at any given moment.

The Adventures in E-book Entrepreneurship

Being an e-book entrepreneur is no easy feat. When I released my first book I simply published it and gave no real attention to promoting it. I figured it was on Amazon so my work was done.

Boy was I wrong.

Picture
This industry requires long hours of research and writing, web design and gaining some knowledge about ecommerce, and learning how to self-promote. However, the payoff can be infinite. Unlike many other online businesses you are not limited to your neighborhood or region.

The beauty about e-books is that you can publish them and distribute them worldwide. You could receive orders from Indonesia, Canada, USA, and France and so forth. This global opportunity doesn’t apply to a majority of other online opportunities as they may be connected to the owners being available to clients immediately close to them.

Promotion & Building a Team

I experienced many sleepless nights because I was self-promoting and submitting my book to various websites and Facebook groups so my e-book would be “in front” of a large audience. I was not sure where my book audience was so I had to test the various seas and lakes of promotion channels to find my way. Then I realized that I was doing it the hard way. I needed to add book promoters to my Power Crew so that they could help me cut through the drama and save myself some time.

All Night Book Fests: E-book Stores Are 24 Hours

One thing I learned to love about being an E-book Entrepreneur is that I don’t have to worry about operating within strict timelines when it comes to promoting sales online. The regular 9-5 (or odd 12-4 in some cases) hours of operation that some brick & mortar stores offer don’t apply here. I can sell e-books regardless if I’m awake or not. Not bad huh? Most of the work that goes along with setting up an E-book business is done in the beginning. Almost like “Set it & Forget it!” This industry is front heavy, but after you set up your infrastructure you can continue to sell with very little daily maintenance. I sailed into the Best Sellers ranks once my frontend work was laid down and I was able to maintain the #1 spot.

Not Just For Authors

Likewise, e-book authorship is not just for Established authors. Anyone who has an interest in anything could write about their interest and convert that Word document into an e-book. Some of the best e-books are actually from unknown (or indie) authors as well as some of the highest selling e-books because they have a knack for online promotion.

So if you are wondering what is a great way to jumpstart your online business or what you should be doing, E-book publishing is something worth considering. I don’t see (nor do I hope) that E-books will replace traditional paperback books, but they certainly are popular enough to make all authors stop to think about how they should use e-books to their advantage; even more so for business owners (on- and offline).

I did just that and have not regretted this major boss move for me and my brand!

Now it’s your turn. Become a successful self-published author and use your best seller to save your business and sanity.
