As part of the OWS CyCon 2019, we asked our fantasy authors to write about what makes their world, or the world of another author unique. Each of them has come up with very different answers which reflect their writing processes, their research methods, and their views on world building.
We hope you find these insights interesting, and that they maybe give you some new things to think about when you pick up a new book, or even start writing your own.

After reading this interview, be sure to check out the responses from our other fantastic writers: https://owscycon.ourwriteside.com/fantasy-events-at-cycon/fantasy-blog-tour-what-makes-an-authors-world-unique/

What Makes Reloria Unique?
By Kasper Beaumont

Picture
I have been challenged to write a blog post on what makes the fantasy world of Reloria unique.  I always love a challenge, so grab your dragons and enjoy the ride.

Halflings and their bond fairies

In the Hunters of Reloria series, the magical land has been invaded before and many defenceless races were killed by the scaly invaders, called Vergai.  At the time of the first invasion, the dragons, elves and mages worked together with men to eliminate the enemy and restore peace to their lands.  Once the Vergai were vanquished, the dragons and humans resumed their own war, most of the mages returned to their own country,  and the elves were left to pick up the pieces.
A magical forcefield was created by the elves and mages, known as the Elven Shield of Reloria.  The elves also wished to offer enhanced protection to the weaker halflings, so they sacrificed some of their magic to create bond-fairies.
Bond-fairies share energy and magic with halflings.  They make the halflings stronger and also share strong emotions with them.  Their life forces are linked so that they can only go a short distance apart and the halfling’s food intake sustains the fairies in a symbiotic relationship.
Meet Fandri and Fandri-La.  These two leave their peaceful village in the Southlands and experience high fantasy adventures together with elves, dwarves and dragons.  Oh, and did I mention a talking bear?
Magical powers used by the wizards and mages
In Reloria there is a magic system which can be somewhat related to some types of witchcraft in our own world.  There are five elemental powers which are: air, water, fire, earth and shape-shifting.  Most magic users have one or perhaps two powers but very strong Mages may have three powers.  Having more than this is unheard of before the beginning of the series.

Centaurs
In the Hunters of Reloria series, I would classify the centaurs as Pagan.  They have an enormous golden pyramid which is hollowed out and fitted with strong telescopes.  They follow the movements of the planets and stars and believe that celestial events such as eclipses have special meaning.
Picture
Hunters of Reloria series blurb:
Halfling friends Randir and Fendi and their bond-fairies discover scaly invaders in their magical land of Reloria. They leave their peaceful farm village and embark on a quest to save the Elven Jewel which turns out to be quite a surprise. It’s a race against time to stop the warlike invaders. They join forces with dwarves, elves, men and a mysterious dragon, and call themselves the Hunters of Reloria.
The quest is perilous, with numerous encounters with the ruthless Vergai. The Elven Jewel is stolen. The quest becomes a race to the portal to retrieve the jewel before it can be taken to the wastelands of Vergash. In further books, a mage must be found to aid them, and they visit the home of the dragons. A battle for Reloria ensues where unless the Vergai are stopped, the consequences for the Relorians is death.

Giant Cyclops
When I wanted to make a menacing enemy, I created with these giant Cyclops.  Not only are they intimidating at 20 foot tall but they are fearsome warriors.
The most dangerous thing about them is their eye.  It can heat up into a laser beam which cuts through everything in its path.  Pretty daunting for halflings, bond-fairies, elves and dwarves etc to battle.
Check out the books to find out how the Hunters of Reloria fare against such formidable opponents.

The biggest book promo I've ever been in: Our books are not free @RoseMontague @TimaMariaLacoba

Q: What do you call a book sale that isn't a sale?
A: A Facebook Happening
I kinda like the name: 'happening', which is reminiscent of the 1960s when happenings were the place to be.
I support the concept behind this
event, where authors are making a stand against the current trend of giving away your hard work for nothing, After all what other industry gives away their product for free? None.
What is Our Books Are Not Free all about? Here's the word from our organiser: Rose Montague: Over 100 authors
Not a single book will be given away
Not a single prize will be awarded
Just some fantastic authors
With great books
At reasonable prices
All times Eastern US.......

You may be asking: why should I attend this happening? The answer is simple: to meet an awesome bunch of authors. I have met many of the participants online and have read some of their excellent books.  If you are happy to spend $3 or so on a cup of coffee which lasts but a few minutes, then please consider supporting an author who has spent a year or more writing a book. I sure will.

A bit about the free book debate:
Have I given books away?  Yes I have.  Why might I do that? That's a very good question. In short, I give free books in exchange for a  review on Amazon. Also from time to time I will make the first book of my trilogy 'Elven Jewel' available for free. This is a marketing tactic. Rather than spend fortunes to advertise, I choose to make my book free for a while and as the word gets around, folks snap it up and often buy the other books, which is where I make my money. Now that book took me over a year to write, have edited and published. Is it worth nothing? Definitely not, but as I said it is the cheapest form of advertising. It doesn't cost a cent for me to give away a book, so that is what I choose to do sometimes. My book has recently been free for an entire month and my Amazon rankings are now the highest they have ever been and sales are steady.  This is a very good outcome for me. But all good things must come to an end, so I have now raised the price to 99c and will see how sales and rankings go that that selling point.

I hope I have convinced you to pop along and learn more about these authors. You are bound to see books you like there, so snap up a few and support the hard-working authors.

Our Books Are Not Free runs from February 11 to 15 ( or 12-16 if you are in Australia and nearly a day ahead). My timeslot for promoting the Hunters of Reloria series is on Valentine's Day at 2pm Eastern U.S. time, and 5am Brisbane time the next day.

Entry 28: 'Elves on horseback' by Nita Thomas, adult
Picture
Entry 29: 'The Lost Library' by Brighid Walton, adult
I'm sure these artists enjoy keeping me in suspense with these last minute entries.  Well, they certainly were worth the wait.  Top left is an image of Daeron and Shari-Rose from Nita Thomas.  I really like the shape of the horses and also the clouds are so well done.  The orange planet looks great too.
Picture
Entry 30: 'Shari-Rose and Daeron's Daily Ride' by Hecate Jerrett, adult
The top left painting is one by Brighid Walton of Raja and Nanine entering the lost library.   It has stuck true to the description with the marble columns and spiral stairs.  I can almost smell the musty, aged books there.
The entry on the bottom left is another fun one of the elves, by Hecate Jerrett this time.  I like the lively sense of motion from the horses and the colours and placing of the elves. Is that a partial eclipse?  What a great idea.
Congratulations to all the artists on their fine work.  Best of luck in the competition.
Note: one of the art teacher is now unable to be a judge, but an art teacher from the local high school has jumped to the rescue.  Thank you.
There are only 3 days to vote in the audience choice award, so duck on over to Facebook and click 'like' on your favourite entry to vote

With just 9 hours to go in the art competition, I'm expecting a few last-minute entries.  This spiky dragon was painted by Nita and is her second entry in the competition.  The silhouette style is really quite eye-catching, and I like the crenelated castle as well.  Good job Nita, and best of luck in the competition.

Entry 24: 'Fairy' by Luke M, grade 5
Picture
Entry 25: 'Isabelle' by Elly W, grade 5
This competition is so much fun.  I can see the judges are going to have a hard time deciding which are the winners.
Here are the next 3 entries by Luke, Elly and Nita.
Luke's entry (top left) is of a gorgeous fairy who reminds me of Tinkerbell, one of my favourites.  I love the bold use of colour here and the detail in the wings.
Picture
Entry 26: 'Violetta' by Nita Thomas, adult
The picture on the top left is a character imagined by Elly, who is also from grade 5.  I wonder if the blue underneath Isabelle means she is levitating.  I really like her eyes and two-toned hair.  Good job.
The picture on the bottom here is an adult entry by Nita, which is one of the descriptions from the story.  I really like the mushroom house, so cute.  I like how the cot is there and Violetta has gone off wandering as she explores her magic.  Nice and colourful.
Thanks to all the artists, and good luck in the competition.

Entries close tomorrow.

Entry 21: Baby Violetta, by Jacinta, grade 3
Picture
Entry 22: Nanine the elf, by Bailey, grade 5
As with previous years, entries come in like a flood in the last week of the competition.  The entries here are by Jacinta from grade 3; Bailey from grade 5; and Chloe from grade 5.  I appreciate that so many students have taken the time to enter, it's humbling.
On the top left, we have Jacinta's interpretation of Baby Violetta asleep in her cradle.  No doubt she's exhausted from her adventures.  Great use of colour and glitter there, thanks.
Picture
Entry 23: The Baby Mage, by Chloe, grade 5
On the top right is an elf picture by Bailey from grade 5.  This one is an elf from the story about Raja and Nanine exploring a long-forgotten elven library.  That's the story I am writing at the moment, so it is doubly exciting to see.  Thanks Bailey.
The last picture is a cute one of Baby Violetta magically flying her cot out the window as she discovers her powers.  I like how Chloe has used a trail of magical sparkles.
Thank you to all the artists, and good luck in the competition.

The competition closes on Sunday.  Draw a picture of one of the Hunters of Reloria characters as depicted to enter.

Entry 18: 'Violetta' by Joanne Steptoe, adult
Picture
Entry 19: 'Fairy' by Zara-Lee, grade 5
Check out these cute artworks.
The first one is the baby mage: Violetta, flying through the sky about Nnanell in her cot.  This is the first scrapbook entry I have received and I'm very impressed.
The 2nd entry is another sweet fairy by Zara-Lee who entered another fairy already.  Lovely and cheerful.

Picture
Entry 20: Fairy Time by Neve R., grade 2
The 3rd entry is by Neve who is in grade 2.  What a stylish little fairy.  Very well done.  I particularly like the sparkles around her wand.

Congratulations to all the artists on their top-notch entries.  Best of luck in the art competition.

Entry to the art competition closes on Sunday.  Draw, paint, or even scrapbook one of the Hunters of Reloria characters to enter.
