H.M. Clarke has a resume which includes such diverse occupations as author, accountant, console operator, paper shuffler and ambitions to be a cheesecake taste tester (I'm all for that last one BTW).
A self-confessed fantasy and sci-fi nerd, H.M. has written a science fiction novel called The Enclave which she discusses with us today.  She has grown up on a steady diet of novels, and TV classics like Doctor Who, Blakes 7, Battlestar Galatica, Star Trek and Star Wars.
I recently caught up with Australian H.M. Clarke for an interview exclusive for the Fantasy Sci-Fi Network.

Here are some of the highlights from our chat:
  • H.M. reveals the controversial political topic which was her inspiration for The Enclave.
  • Her favourite quote is a Chinese proverb
  • She was moved to tears by a certain line from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
  • The Hobbit actor H.M. would like to be stuck on a deserted planet with
  • It's always time for a road trip
  • and more ...

You can catch the full interview here

Sent on a babysitting mission to Junter 3, RAN officer Katherine Kirk, finds herself quickly embroiled in the politics between the New Holland Government and the Val Myran refugees claiming asylum.
After an Alliance attack, Kirk and her team hunt the enemy down and discover that they have finally found the lair of the man they have been searching for…
And the captive who has been waiting patiently for rescue.
“What would you do to the man who destroyed every important person in your life?”

Bryan Rainey drops by for a Fantasy Sci-Fi Network interview #FSFNet @bdr2031 #fantasy

Bryan Rainey is a fantasy writer with a self-confessed passion for writing.  He has just published a fantasy book called  'Unforseen:' book one in the Starshot Chronicles.  Bryan is madly writing away and has ambitions to finish Southern Desires; I, Ronin; Dragons of the Cosmos; Salvation of Gaalin and its two sequels this year.  Phew, that is a big to-do list!
Bryan also has an alter-ego 'Brien O'Raighne' under which he publishes adult-only fiction.
His writing is a unique mixture of fantasy, science fiction, super heroes, paranormal and horror.

What do we learn about Bryan from his interview?
Well, without wanting to spill all the beans, I can share a few tidbits with you and then you'll have to click on the FSFNet interview to discover the rest.
  • Bryan outs himself as a 'Dungeons and Dragons' Dragon Master, which shows a high level of skill and determination.
  • He talks about the favourite character in his book series, who is the heroine, Fiona.  I am quite intrigued about these 'goblimites' she is battling and must explore this further.
  • Bryan is also a big Star Wars fan (well, honestly, aren't we all?) as evidenced by his list of most-recently read books.
  • I did find it interesting that Bryan (or Brien) likes to write erotica, but lists romance as a genre he doesn't enjoy reading.  I'm guessing his books are not your typical formula and he is bringing something new to the genre.
You can see the full interview here on the Fantasy Sci-Fi Network website.

Here is Bryan's first novel in the fantasy genre: Unforseen which has just been released this month.
Blurb:  Fiona Harley, a princess and Sentinel Knight, escapes her captors in a starfighter.  She manages to reach the nearest jump gate.  As she set up the coordinates to get home, her fighter's navicomputer is hit.
The coordinates scramble as she enters the jumpgate sending her to the planet of Desarti on the other side of the galaxy, where she is stranded.
A young paladin named Gaalin iv Coel Fan rescues Fiona from a sinking starfighter. There is something strange about this young paladin as others arrive to the location hours later.

An author interview every budding writer should read with Patricia Reding for the Fantasy Sci-Fi Network @Oathtakers #FSFNet #interview

Multi-award winning fantasy author Patricia Reding took a ride in the FSFNet's interview space shuttle to share her writing and ideas with us.  As well as writing, Patricia is a book review and a lawyer (sounds like a fearsome combination).  She lives on an island on the Mississippi with her family and a beautiful dog named Flynn Rider.
Patricia enjoys writing the The Oathtaker Series and is a long-term member of the Fantasy Sci-Fi Network.

It is an interesting story how Patricia came to be a fantasy writer.  Even in her school days, she was drawn to writing, but her initial forays were more into instructive or persuasive text.  She had a feeling that there was more to writing than work.  After a time, she decided to explore creative writing and this has opened up a whole new exciting past-time and she hasn't looked back.
It is very interesting to read how much effort Patricia has put into honing her writing skills and she speaks extensively about the writing process and writing tools such as Scrivener and Bublish.
Patricia has some great ideas for the future and I must admit to be impressed with the person she has chosen to read her audio book.  I was pleasantly surprised to see who her writing partner is: great choice.
I bet you will all enjoy her interview as much as I have.  You can see it all here:

Oathtaker

An Oath Sworn. A Struggle Engaged. A Sacrifice Required. When Mara, a trained Oathtaker, is drawn by the scent of the Select to battle underworld beasts summoned by the powers of evil to destroy the guardians of life, she swears a life oath for the protection of her charge.
To renounce her word would be treasonous; to fail, ruinous; to persevere, tortuous. Abiding by an oath requires sacrifice.

Review: Deadpool - Marvel super hero plays it for laughs and wild abandon  #Deadpool #Marvel

The term 'super hero' is kind of inappropriate here, with this chemically enhanced jokester with a devil-may-care attitude not being focussed on saving people, but on revenge.  But don't be deterred, there is a hell of a lot to like in the adults only movie.  My partner and I laughed most of the way through, apart from the times I cringed from the violence.  Warning: it's not one for the faint-hearted.
What's to like?
  • Pretty much everything really.  The cast are really good.  Ryan Reynolds (and his butt) as Deadpool; the beautiful Morena Baccarin as Vanessa; and the deliciously loathsome Ed Skrein as Ajax.
  • The plot is actually pretty cool (shock horror) for a comic book movie.  It opens with a visually spectacular action sequence which is intercut with the obligatory backstory of how Deadpool gained his super-healing powers.  Basically he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and this mutant experiment was his only hope of survival.  Of course, things didn't go quite to plan and there is a dastardly villain in need of terminating.
  • The black humour is wickedly dark and the timing is so totally inappropriate as to be hilarious.
  • Extra-special effects in the action scenes are totally incredible.
  • There were a couple of X-men.  I love the joke that the producers could only afford two.
  • The opening credits are seriously funny and original.
  • There is a beautiful love story at the heart of the movie.
What I didn't like:
  • The violence was a bit graphic for my tastes, but I'm sure there are many hot-blooded young men who will find it right up their alley
The verdict:
  • I loved it .  Five stars and a round of applause from me.

Author interview with fantasy writer L.R.W. Lee for the Fantasy Sci-Fi Network @LRWLee #FSFNet #fantasy

Lucky me got to interview the charming L.R.W. this weekend for the Fantasy Sci-Fi Network.  I do so love talking to authors and finding out what makes them tick.

L.R.W.'s series is about Andy Smithson, who is on a quest to fulfil a prophesy to break an ancient curse by collecting ingredients to make a magical potion.  Sounds totally awesome.  She has also written about mythological creatures and invented some fabulous beasts of her own.

In the interview L.R.W. discusses her pen name, some insights behind the Andy Smithson series and a few personal facts such as what she is about to cross off her bucket list (I'm right with her on that one too).
So please head on over to the Fantasy Sci-Fi Network to check out her fun interview and great books.
